Kathy Freeman

Kathy Freeman is probably Australia's most successful track athlete since Rayleen Boyle. Her achievements have been amazing in the past few years - the highlight being her winning the gold medal for the 400 metres at the World Championships in Athens, Greece.

Another major highlight was winning silver at the Olympic games in Atlanta. She was beaten by the older more experienced French woman, Marie Jose-Perec, however after the World Championship win Kathy is making a claim on the Olympic title in Sydney 2000.

However, her career has not been without controversy. During the 1994 Commonwealth Games in British Columbia, Canada after winning the 400 metres, she paraded around the stadium with both the Australian and Aboriginal flags.

Now nobody seemed to care about this until the Australian Commonwealth Games chief, Arthur Tunstall, kicked up a fuss about Kathy carrying the Aboriginal flag.

Now a lot has been said about this subject but here's my two cents worth. I thought it was great when I saw her do it and I wouldn't care if she did it at Sydney either. She's just proud of her heritage and there's nothing wrong with that.

However on another higher note - Kathy was also awarded Australian of the Year early this year - Congratulations!!!
